About Shepherd Park:

Shepherd Park (Shepherd Park DC) is a popular Northwest neighborhood of approximately 700 single family homes bounded by Aspen Street to the South, Eastern Avenue to the North, 16th Street and Rock Creek Park to the West and Georgia Avenue to the East. Along the tree-lined streets of Shepherd Park DC is a mix of Colonials (both traditional and Spanish), Tudors, ramblers, split-levels, farm houses, bungalows and several Sears frame homes.

Shepherd Park DC takes its name from Alexander Robey Shepherd ("Boss" Shepherd), who administered the Territory of the District of Columbia for Congress after the Civil War and served as its first Governor from 1873-4. In 1868 he built a Second Empire-style Victorian at the corner of what is now 13th and Geranium Streets. He and his wife called it "Bleak House" after Dickens' novel. Boss Shepherd owned a plant nursery and is credited with planting 60,000 trees in the neighborhood, as well as a variety of wild flowers. The street names (Aspen, Holly, Floral, Jonquil etc) in Shepherd Park DC derive from this period.

In more recent times, the most notable resident of Shepherd Park DC has been the Walter Reed Army Medical Center which occupies 113 acres in the southeast corner of the neighborhood. Fort Stevens, one of the ring of Civil War forts defending the City from Confederate forces, is just to the south. A popular feature of Shepherd Park DC is the new soccer field and track at Shepherd Elementary. Several generations of Washingtonians have favored Shepherd Park DC. Its tree-lined streets give it a gracious feel and its proximity to both Takoma and Silver Spring Metro stops make it extremely convenient. In the last several years, a Halloween house decoration contest and parade have enlivened the days before the annual trick or treat. Many residents of Shepherd Park DC also appreciate the proximity of the beautiful Rock Creek Park.
