American University
Park (AU Park DC) is a popular Northwest neighborhood of approximately
2,700 single family homes bounded by Nebraska Avenue to the South,
Western to the North, Massachusetts to the West and Wisconsin to
the East. Prior to the 1920s several farms dotted the area and most
of the land was owned by the Methodist Church which built some wood
frame homes for their clergy. In the twenties, WC and AN Miller
began to develop the area, building closely spaced brick homes with
front porches or stoops, and often without driveways.
Notable
residents of AU Park DC include American University, Georgetown
Day School, the Chancery of the Embassy of Japan, and Fort Bayard,
one of the ring of Civil War forts defending the City from Confederate
forces. A popular feature of AU Park DC is Turtle Park with swings
and slides, sandboxes, a baseball diamond and tennis courts. Several
generations of Washingtonians have favored AU Park DC. Its tree-lined
streets give it a gracious feel and its proximity to Tenley Metro
make it extremely convenient. Many of these homes have been renovated
and updated in the last fifteen years, a number with two story additions
in the rear, adding a full kitchen and family room with a master
suite on the second level.
